NOTE: THE UNIVERSITY AIR SQN ‘SCONE TROPHY’ IS AN ANNUAL AEROBATIC COMPETITION BETWEEN STUDENTS OF THE UASs OF GLASGOW, EDINBURGH, ABERDEEN AND QUEENS BELFAST. IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE UGSAS AT GLASGOW, THE TROPHY COMPETITION FLYING WAS AT GLASGOW, BUT NOWADAYS PLACES LIKE KINLOSS OR LEUCHARS ARE THE VENUE.
IN 1972 THE TWO RAF JET AEROBATIC TEAMS WERE INVITED TO CARRY OUT FLYING DISPLAYS FOR THE STUDENTS, THEIR FAMILIES AND A SMALL ENCLOSURE FOR THE PUBLIC. JET DISPLAY FLYING WAS CANCELLED ON THE MORNING OF THE EVENT BY ORDER OF THE COURTS. THE LOCAL TURKEY FARMER, JOHN PINKERTON (SON OF A FAMOUS WARTIME FIGHTER PILOT, GEORGE PINKERTON) WHO APPLIED FOR THE INJUNCTION, SUBSEQUENTLY CLOSED HIS FARM AT THAT SITE NEAR THE END OF RWY 23 AFTER HIS ATTEMPT TO BLOCK THE RUNWAY EXTENSION FAILED
